We do love to spoil Merlot & Flora, actually I will rephrase that - I love to spoil them more than Nick does. Every morning they start the day with a large cod liver oil tablet each to keep their joints and coats in good condition. Then they normally trot out into the yard for some outdoor time.
They are both mesmerised by the hens! And try and get into the pen whenever the door is open. Originally, they both seemed to think that the hens would be new play mates or pack animals but they were both soon shocked when they got into the pen that the hens were not afraid to stick up for themselves and hand out pecks and chase Merlot and Flora if they were feeling threatened. Merlot is still not quite sure what to make of the actual eggs in the shells when they are collected, he has picked up a couple and tried to have a taste but thankfully has not managed to crack any of the shells yet. I recently took this picture of them eating omelettes at the dinner table and zoomed in on Flora – I am sure that is a genuine smile on her face!!
Both Merlot and Flora love eggs! And most weeks have at least one kind of egg-based dinner favouring scrambled and omelettes. Sometimes in the supermarkets here in France at the fresh meat sections, there is fresh meat in packs marketed for dogs, the quality looks amazing and for around 500g it can be around 3-5 euros. They do love this as a very special treat.
This summer they have also enjoyed slices of chilled watermelon on hot summer days to cool them down, Flora can get very defensive if Merlot comes near her food and will often send off a warning growl if he gets close enough.
In the winter months we normally start having our English style roast dinners and I always make sure there is a special portion for them waiting at the end of the meal with lashings of gravy. They absolutely adore Sprouts and Yorkshire puddings but are not keen on carrots, we tend to find these discarded from the bowls and left on the floor afterwards.
They have these special meals as special supplement meals and for general grazing there is always a bowl of dog biscuits next to a clean bowl of water on the kitchen floor for them to enjoy.
There is not a lot that they will not eat but we do not give them grapes, chocolate, nuts or anything else that is harmful to dogs.
They do enjoy their dinners and it is nice to see that they do even if the table manners have a long way to go before, they are improved!
